Potatoes are in!!

On saturday we planted 50 pounds of Yukon Gold potatoes with the help of working members Julie Mayfield and Jim Grode. After planting, we built a new bed for our 3 sisters garden, which will contain corn, beans and butternut squash. Then we treated our guests to a vegetarian lunch of sprouted mung beans stewed in coconut milk with collards and sweet potatoes.

We are thoroughly enjoying getting to know our members, AND receiving lots of help! We are looking forward to having more members out for work days soon!

Having our working members out to help last weekend totally lifted us up! We were feeling pretty worn out, and their new energy gave us exactly what we needed to move forward with a renewed sense of joy. Working cooperatively with our community is what we thrive on. We give thanks for working share members Sam Cook, Linda Block, and Tim Forrest! They gave of themselves whole-heartedly, with smiles and enthusiasm…it was a giant gust of fresh air for us.

Working with a smile...Linda and Tim building beds

We spent most of our time together building new beds. The basic process is laying out cardboard where we want the beds, wetting the cardboard, adding 6″ of compost and then a thick layer of straw.

After working, we feasted on home-made quiche (thanks to our lovely chickens) with freshly picked greens, along with chips and home-made salsa from last years tomatoes and peppers!

I am going to begin posting farm stories and recipes here, as the season progresses.  I’ve never had a blog before, but the idea is that our CSA members can find and post recipes here, and also keep up with farm happenings.  I’m hoping to set this up so that only myself and our CSA members can post, but as I am new to blogging, I’m not sure if this is possible!

Thanks for visiting, I’m off to start some broccoli seeds for us…
